Natural Resource Management

Kellerberrin LCDC was formed in 1984 in response to farmers' enquiries to Council. Salinity, erosion and protection of biodiversity have been the main issues since the group began.

A Strategic Plan has been formulated for the group and the community it represents.

The Shire of Kellerberrin remains committee to NRM Projects and Activities within the District.

Kellerberrin's Landcare Vision

Working together to achieve a productive and sustainable environment, enhancing our community.

Aims of the group

  • Promote the identification and adoption of best practice in Natural Resource Management.
  • Increase financial viability for the community
  • Attract resources to Landcare and the community
  • Increase community involvement in environmental management and sustainability
  • Support biodiversity

About the Area

The Shire of Kellerberrin covers an area of 191970 hectares. It is part of the Avon River Catchment and is drained by tributaries of the Avon River which now exist predominantly as salt flats. The junction of the Lockhart and Yilgarn rivers is also within the Shire of Kellerberrin.

Agricultural land use in the shire is predominantly cereals and livestock. Wheat, Lupins, Barley, Fieldpeas, Faba and Canola are all grown. Sheep numbers decreased dramatically over the past few years however recent improvement of wool returns is again changing the makeup of farming businesses.

Kellerberrin is home to a number of Rare and Endangered Species of both Flora and Fauna. The most recognizable being the Black Flanked Rock Wallaby. This has been successfully reintroduced to a number of rock reserves in the district.

Kellerberrin has had a number of successful Natural Heritage Trust (NHT) projects designed to enhance and protect habitats and to preserve biodiversity. These have included fencing remnants and creating corridors for wildlife access.

The Future

The completion of a strategic business plan has assisted the group to focus on what they would like to achieve in the long term. Kellerberrin is divided into Catchment areas. There are a number of active groups in the district that work to protect their land and increase the sustainability of their farming enterprises.
