History of Dryandra Hostel
The Hostel owes its creation to the efforts of a group of community members who in 1975 were concerned with the need for frail and aged people to leave the district if they became no longer able to live at home. With public support they planned to establish a suitable home to meet the needs of the frail and aged in and around our community.
On September 30th, 1980 the Hon. Dame Margaret Guilfoyle, the then Minister for Social Security, approved the application for a grant. In 1982 the Kellerberrin Care of the Aged Committee was successful in obtaining a grant for $600,000 from the Federal Government to help build a frail and aged person’s hostel in Kellerberrin.
The building was commenced on February 14th 1983 and was officially opened on September 19th 1983 by the Hon. Hendy Cowan.
The Kellerberrin Care of the Aged Committee of the time, worked tirelessly fundraising for nine years, resulting in approximately $70,000 being collected through various activities including catering, street stalls, raffles, donations, sports days and many more. Community volunteers helped run an annual fete for many years again raising a significant amount of money.
The Present
The Hostel is governed by a Board of up eight volunteer community members elected at Annual General Meetings held in August. Community members are invited to become ‘members’ of The Dryandra Hostel Inc by paying the very modest annual membership fee. Contributions by community members at all levels of Dryandra Hostel life are welcomed and appreciated.
The Board and staff of Dryandra Hostel continue to strive to improve the standard and range of facilities at the Hostel. We especially acknowledge the substantial donation from the Michael Coulahan Estate which was utilised to extend the recreation and activity areas for residents. The endless advances of technology and the requirements of Government accreditation will ensure that the upgrading process will be continuous.

We invite you to contact us if you believe our hostel may be able to play a part in your life or in the life of someone you know.
